Monday: Memoirs due. Self-reflection on goals of your memoir. Complete excerpt analysis.
Tuesday: Read Capote's "The Thanksgiving Visitor."
Wednesday: Thanksgiving Thank You cards.

For Monday, November 30: In the 50 Essays book, identify an essay that you think we all should read. You may have to read a few before you find one that you want to share. Be sure to have a rationale for your selection.

Week of 11/16-11/20

Monday: Discuss themes of "Shooting an Elephant" and "A Hanging" (NOT "How to Shoot an Elephant, Lauren!)

Tuesday: Impact of syntactical choices: "On Being a Cripple"

Wednesday: Score "I am a Cripple" sample essays.

Thursday: Individual analysis of memoir excerpts: Firebird by Mark Doty, When I Was a Puerto Rican by Esmeralda Santiago, and All Over but the Shoutin' by Rick Bragg.

Friday: In-class essay: independent memoir. Bring book to class!

Due Monday, 11/23: Final draft of personal memoir. Bring in rough draft and picture to hand in with your final paper.

Thursday: Discuss "Salvation" by Langston Hughes and "Shame" by Dick Gregory
Friday: Rough draft of personal narrative due. Peer evaluation.
